Hong Kong Observatory said it will issue Typhoon Signal No 1 on Wednesday evening as Typhoon Saola is set to come within 800 kilometers of the city.

Shortly afterwards, the Macao Special Administrative Region also announced that it would hoist the Typhoon Signal No 1 by Wednesday afternoon.

The weather watchdog said Tropical Cyclone Saola will move across the northeastern part of the South China Sea Wednesday and Thursday, edging towards the coast of eastern Guangdong.

Hong Kong is expected to be windy and see squally showers on Friday and Saturday as Saola may edge closer to the Pearl River Estuary, according to the present forecast track.

The tropical cyclone may make landfall over Guangdong or move westwards across the coastal waters of Guangdong, in light of the uncertainty cast by the influence of northeast monsoon over the cyclone’s track and intensity.
