The 12th Canton Tower Run Up competition, set to be held on Oct 19 at the Guangzhou landmark, will for the first time include a competition for robots.

At the launch conference on Monday, Zou Yongbin, chief economist of Guangdong's Department of Industry and Information Technology, extended an invitation to global robot companies to participate in the climb up the staircase at the Canton Tower's viewing deck.

Human contestants can register for three races: a climb from the 2nd floor to the 112th floor, totaling 2,738 stairs; a spiral staircase with 1,096 stairs; and the Alpha Sky Exploration, a walkway outside the skyscraper protected only by a rope net.
