HK logs 8 new cases, targeted testing at Lohas Park completed

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported eight new COVID-19 infections on Saturday, pushing the city's tally to 11,371, as more than 1,200 residents were tested during a targeted testing operation overnight.

All but one new cases were locally transmitted, a spokesman for the Center for Health Protection of the Department of Health said in a statement. The source of origin of one local case was unknown while the remaining six cases were linked to previous infections.

The untraceable case involved a 42-year-old decoration worker who had been asymptomatic. He last went to work on Friday.

1,200 residents tested

More than 1,200 residents in the Tseung Kwan O district were tested for COVID-19 overnight after one of the residents was confirmed infected on Friday.

The government designated Tower 9 of La Splendeur at Lohas Park as a restricted area and sealed off the block at around 8 pm Friday. Residents in the building were ordered to receive a COVID-19 test. As of 2 am Saturday, 1,235 residents had undergone testing, the government said in a statement.

The exercise was completed at around 7:30 am on Saturday. It is not yet known whether anyone has tested positive for the virus.

Thirteen residents were found to have flouted the testing orders, the government said. They were each fined HK$5,000 (US$645) and ordered to undergo COVID-19 testing. 

The government said it would take follow-up actions against about 60 households that did not answer the door when officers came to check.
