HONG KONG - The Hong Kong government on Friday completed two more “ambush-style” testing operations in Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok, yielding one preliminary positive COVID-19 case.

Seal-off areas in the two Kowloon districts were lifted in the morning after 2,230 residents were tested overnight.

The preliminary positive case was detected in the Yau Ma Tei restricted area, where 99 residents were found to have flouted the testing orders

The preliminary positive case was detected in the Yau Ma Tei restricted area, where 99 residents were found to have flouted the testing orders, the government said in a statement. They were each fined HK$5,000 (US$645) and ordered to undergo COVID-19 testing.

Three close contacts of previous patients were found in the operation in Mong Kok, where more than 70 people were tested. No one floated the testing orders.

The government pledged to take follow-up actions against about 200 households in the Yau Ma Tei area which did not answer the door when officers came to check.

The two operations began on Thursday evening, marking the fourth straight night of targeted testing operations that took place at multiple locations at the same time. The drive was expected to last until Feb 10.

The government earlier said there would be more targeted testing operations before Feb 10 to ensure that the city’s fourth wave of infections could be gradually controlled after the Lunar New Year holidays.

Hong Kong reported 22 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, 19 locally infected, raising the city’s overall tally to 10,552.
