BERLIN - Leipzig were unable to defend the top spot after sharing the spoils with 10-man Borussia Monchengladbach at the 20th round in Bundesliga on Saturday.

With the draw, Leipzig slipped from the 1st to the 2nd place whereas Monchengladbach slumped from the 3rd to the 4th position in the Bundesliga standings

Monchengladbach dictated the proceedings on the pitch in the first half but things changed at the hour mark as Alassane Plea saw two quick yellow cards for nagging at the hour mark. The dismissal played into the hands of Leipzig, who benefitted on their numerical advantage to secure a draw.

From the kick off Monchengladbach controlled possession and pressed Leipzig into their own territory. Hence Monchengladbach created the first two half-chances of the game through Plea and Oscar Wendt with six minutes played.

Leipzig needed some time to gain a foothold into the match as Lukas Klostermann tested goalkeeper Yann Sommer with a follow up shot in the 12th minute.

However, Monchengladbach remained the more dangerous side and opened the scoring at the 24th minute when Oscar Wendt's lay up inside the box allowed Plea to slot home left footed into the bottom right corner.

The visitors remained on the front foot and doubled their advantage with great assistance of  Klostermann, whose misplaced clearance found its way to Jonas Hofmann who made no mistake to slot home the 2-0 lead in the 35th minute.

After the restart, Julian Nagelsmann made two changes and fielded Yussuf Poulsen and Patrik Schick.

One of the substitutions paid off after only five minutes into the second half as Schick capitalized on a fumbled ball from Sommer and poked home into the open goal.

Things went from bad to worse for Monchengladbach as Plea was sent off for continuous nagging in the 61st minute.

Leipzig established their power play and pressed all Monchengladbach players around the penalty box. The visitors defence did a good job and defused almost all efforts. However, they were hapless in the 89th minute when Christopher Nkunku unleashed a long-range hammer to beat Sommer into the far post corner to secure at least one point on home soil.
