HONG KONG - A spokesperson with the Commissioner's Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Friday strongly deplored and firmly opposed a British court ruling concerning staff at the Hong Kong economic and trade office in London, alongside smearing remarks made by government agencies and officials of the United Kingdom (UK).
The remarks came after two employees of the Hong Kong economic and trade office in London were found guilty of "assisting a foreign intelligence agency."
By arresting and suing Chinese nationals in the UK without any factual basis, and securing the conviction by abusing the law and judicial process, the UK is blatantly endorsing those seeking to destabilize Hong Kong, the spokesperson said, adding that such groundless accusations and smears against the HKSAR government are nothing but a typical political stunt.
The spokesperson urged the UK to rectify its wrongdoings, put an end to its political manipulation against China, and stop emboldening the anti-China destabilizing forces. China will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its own interests, the spokesperson said.
