DAMASCUS - Syria has launched a large-scale security operation across several provinces to track down Islamic State (IS) cells, the interior authorities said Saturday in a statement.

The operation, based on "precise intelligence monitoring" and expected to last several days, targets IS hideouts and sleeper cells through coordination with the General Intelligence Directorate, the authorities said.

Specialized units are conducting the operation in multiple areas, including Idlib province in northwestern Syria, with footage showing the forces raiding suspected IS locations.

The authorities did not provide details on arrests or casualties.

It coincides with Syrian interim leader Ahmad al-Sharaa's upcoming US visit, where counterterrorism efforts against IS remnants in Syria are expected to be discussed.
