Members of the Thai community in Hong Kong marked the Loy Krathong festival celebrating joy, gratitude, and new beginnings on Wednesday, giving locals a genuine taste of authentic Thai traditions.

The celebrations formed part of the Thai Carnival 2024, which was jointly organized by Thailand’s consulate general in Hong Kong, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Miramar Travel, Mira Hotel, and Hong Kong Airlines.

“Tonight, we are experiencing the true essence of Thai culture in various aspects,” Thai Consul General in Hong Kong Chaturont Chaiyakam said in his welcome speech. “Apart from the delicious Thai food, we are also celebrating Loy Krathong, which is one of the biggest cultural festivities in Thailand.”

He said Loy Krathong falls annually on the night of the full moon in the twelfth month of the Thai lunar calendar.

Thai people would send “krathongs" - small baskets made from plants and loaded with flowers, candles and bamboo - down rivers and canals to make wishes and pay their respects to water spirits. In northern Thailand, locals would float lanterns into the sky as offerings to the Buddha.

“Over the years the sight of lights floating across the country's sky and rivers has become a popular tourist attraction for visitors from all over the world,” Chaiyakam said. “Let us work together to promote greater cultural exchange between Thailand and Hong Kong and bring our peoples closer.”

The main day of the Loy Krathong festival in Thailand falls on Nov 15 this year.
