HONG KONG — An 80-year-old man allegedly killed his 66-year-old wife before jumping from their flat at Kwai Chung Estate late Sunday night, in what police have classified as a murder-suicide case.

Authorities received a report at approximately 11:32 pm from a security guard at Chun Kwai House, who heard a loud noise and found the man lying on the ground outside the building. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and pronounced him dead, according to a police press briefing on Monday.

After entering the man’s flat, police officers found a woman lying unconscious on the living room floor, covered in blood and with serious injuries to her head and body. She was also pronounced dead at the scene.

An initial examination indicated that her death occurred between 7 and 11 pm, said Wan Chun-hong, acting superintendent of Kwai Tsing district police.

The man, a retiree, and his wife — who works as a cleaner — had been married for more than 40 years. Their daughters had moved out earlier.

Although there were no records of domestic violence or mental illness, the couple reportedly did not have a good relationship. They had recently told their family about intentions to divorce, and the man had also expressed suicidal thoughts.

Evidence suggested that the man jumped from the apartment after attacking his wife with hard objects.

Wan said the windows of the apartment were found open, facing in the direction the man was believed to have jumped.

No suicide note was found, though police found three cellphones used by the couple. Police also recovered two bags of blood-stained clothing and hard objects such as metal pipes from a rubbish bin in the public area, he added.
