President Xi Jinping has called on China and Brunei to deepen strategic communication and practical cooperation amid global changes and turbulence, saying that the two countries should take the building of a China-Brunei community with a shared future as a guideline to inject more positive energy into regional peace and stability.

Xi made the remarks while meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday with Brunei's Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah. The crown prince is paying an official visit to China from Monday to Friday.

Noting that China and Brunei are close neighbors brought together by the ancient maritime Silk Road, Xi said that cooperation between the two countries has not only delivered tangible benefits to their peoples, but also set a fine example of equality and win-win cooperation between countries of different sizes.

Last year, Xi and the Sultan of Brunei, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, reached important consensus on building a China-Brunei community with a shared future, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations.

As China has begun to implement its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) this year and Brunei is advancing toward Brunei Vision 2035, Xi said the two sides should take the alignment of their development strategies as an opportunity to push bilateral cooperation to a new level.

He called on the two countries to be strategic partners with a high degree of mutual trust, continue to firmly support each other and make coordinated efforts to advance exchanges and cooperation in various fields.

The two countries should also be development partners for mutual benefit and win-win results, Xi said.

Xi urged efforts to advance major flagship cooperation projects and expand cooperation in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and the digital economy.

He said that China and Brunei should be partners in mutual learning between civilizations by jointly implementing the Global Civilization Initiative, strengthening people-to-people and cultural exchanges and fostering highlights of new achievements in building closer bonds between the peoples.

Xi added that the two countries should be partners in global governance, work with countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to build a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future, and make the region a model of peace, stability, development and prosperity amid profound changes unseen in a century.

Calling China a long-standing friend of Brunei, the crown prince said that Brunei firmly adheres to the one-China policy and stands ready to work with China to deepen the strategic cooperative partnership, maintain close high-level exchanges, and strengthen trade and investment cooperation for the benefit of both peoples.

China has played a key role in promoting world peace and stability, upholding multilateralism and safeguarding the international order, he said, adding that Brunei looks forward to working closely with China to deepen ASEAN-China cooperation and safeguard regional prosperity and stability.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. According to the Foreign Ministry, bilateral trade in 2025 reached $2.726 billion, with China mainly importing crude oil from Brunei and exporting textiles, building materials and plastic products to the country.
