Voters in HK's EC subsector by-elections urged to cast their ballots

Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC) Chairman David Lok Kai-hong has urged eligible voters in the 2025 Eection Committee Subsector By-elections on Sunday to cast their ballots as he thanked polling staff members for their efforts to ensure orderly polls.

Twenty-eight candidates are contesting a total of 21 seats spanning six subsectors in today’s by-elections, which opened at 9 am and will close at 6 pm. Five ordinary polling stations and one dedicated polling station located at a police station were set up for about 3,600 voters or their authorized representatives.

As of 12:00 pm, turnout had reached 80.53 percent as more than 2,900 voters had cast their ballots, according to a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government statement.

Lok visited on Saturday the polling station at the Exhibition Gallery of Hong Kong Central Library and the central counting station and the media center at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.

He said that the Electronic Poll Register System will continue to be used at OPSs for the issuance of ballot papers to voters so that the process can be conducted accurately and efficiently.

After the voting ends, all ballot boxes will be delivered to the central counting station at the HKCEC, where the counting of votes will take place.

Once the counting of votes is completed, the Returning Officers will declare the election results to the candidates and their agents at the counting zone. The Registration & Electoral Office (REO) will also arrange for the Returning Officers to announce the results for each subsector again on stage at the media center.

The EAC and the REO stressed that they are fully prepared on all fronts to ensure that the by-elections are conducted efficiently, and in an open, honest and fair manner.
