Hong Kong kicked off a new round of study sessions on the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China on Friday as a central government delegation arrived in the special administrative region to help strengthen the city’s understanding of the Congress.

Officials of the HKSAR government and members of the local community attended a seminar at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai on Saturday afternoon.

A session held on Friday evening shortly after the delegation’s arrival saw more than 500 representatives of HKSAR-based central government organizations, Chinese mainland-funded enterprises, as well as branches of national media outlets, taking part.

At the event, Shen Chunyao, director of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, delivered a talk on the gist of the CPC’s 20th National Congress, which ended in October.

Luo Huining, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, asked members of these organizations to take the lead and motivate the SAR’s various sectors in putting into action what has been learned from the congress, and channel greater strengths from it to advance their daily work and make greater contributions to building Hong Kong and the country

He stressed the need to fully grasp the congress’ major themes and achievements, as well as the great changes that have been made in the past decade, and their significance.

Under the guidelines of the 20th Party Congress, members of the Hong Kong community should constantly open up new prospects for the city’s development, Shen said.

Yang Wanming, deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, said Hong Kong-based mainland organizations and enterprises have a special responsibility to promote understanding of the congress and implement its spirit in the local community.

Yang stressed that implementing the 20th Party Congress’ spirit in the SAR should be closely aligned with the actual conditions of the work in Hong Kong and Macao in order to identify the focus of the work and achieve concrete results.
