HONG KONG – Hong Kong has experienced the warmest autumn on record from September to November 2022, according to the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO).

The mean maximum temperature and the mean temperature during September to November reached 29.2 degrees Celsius and 26.4 degrees Celsius respectively, making them the highest on record for the same period, the observatory said in a statement on Friday.

November was much warmer than usual in Hong Kong, owing to the northeast monsoon over southern China being generally weaker than normal for most of the time in the month.

Given the rainfall associated with tropical cyclone Nalgae in early November, the HKO said the month was much wetter than usual

According to the HKO, the mean minimum temperature in November reached 22.0 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees higher than normal, while the mean temperature was 1.2 degrees higher, reaching 23.4 degrees Celsius. The two figures “were respectively the second and the third highest for November on record”, it added.

Given the rainfall associated with tropical cyclone Nalgae in early November, the HKO said the month was much wetter than usual. The monthly total rainfall was 130.8 millimeters, more than three times the normal figure of 39.3mm.

On Nov 1, Hong Kong was windy with a few showers due to the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and the Severe Tropical Storm Nalgae. As the storm approached the city, the HKO issued the No 8 Storm Signal the following afternoon.
