HKO to consider raising typhoon signal No 8 Wednesday

HONG KONG - The Hong Kong Observatory said it will consider raising typhoon Signal No 8 on Wednesday as local winds were expected to pick up due to Severe Tropical Storm Nalgae.

In a weather bulletin, the HKO said it was keeping the Strong Wind Signal No 3 till 6 am Wednesday, before announcing a possible upgrade to No 8 during the day.

As of 5 pm, Nalgae was estimated to be about 350 kilometers south-southeast of Hong Kong, moving toward the coast of western Guangdong at 10 km per hour

“The exact timing would depend on the actual variation in local winds. Please stay alert and take note of the latest weather bulletin before departing tomorrow morning,” the HKO said.

As of 5 pm, Nalgae was estimated to be about 350 kilometers south-southeast of Hong Kong, moving toward the coast of western Guangdong at 10 km per hour.

Although Nalgae would weaken gradually, its degree of weakening remains uncertain. The latest forecast indicated Nalgae will adopt a track closer to Hong Kong and skirt within 150 km to the southwest of Hong Kong Wednesday.

With the Strong Wind Signal No 3 in force, classes of kindergartens, schools for children with physical and intellectual disabilities were suspended for the day, the the Education Bureau  said.

The temperature is expected to drop to 19 degrees Tuesday night, as showers become more frequent. Rain will ease off later on Thursday. Sunny intervals will return from Friday, with the mercury hovering at 21-25 C during the weekend.
