HONG KONG - Hong Kong, China failed to move into the quarterfinals of Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, after suffering two consecutive defeats on Saturday at the Hong Kong Stadium.

The three-day tournament saw 16 teams divided into four groups to compete in a single round-robin format. Hong Kong, China, drawn into Group A with Australia, New Zealand and Samoa, opened the tournament with a 43-0 setback to defending champion Australia on Friday.

In an earlier fixture on the second matchday, despite the first points in the edition, Hong Kong, China still capitulated to New Zealand 38-14.

With three straight victories, Samoa advanced into the quarterfinals of the tournament with Australia from Group A, while Ireland, Fiji and France also dominated their respective groups with perfect records to reach the quarterfinals in fine style. South Africa, Argentina and the United States also made it to the quarterfinals as second-place finishers in their pool.

The champion of Hong Kong Sevens will be decided on Sunday.
