Discussions on 20th CPC National Congress held in HK

The Hong Kong government’s district offices have organized activities across the city to boost local residents’ understanding of the essence of the recently concluded 20th Communist Party of China National Congress, attracting nearly 1,000 attendees.

The Party Congress’ affirmation to “one country, two systems” sparked widespread discussions in Hong Kong.

On Wednesday, Hong Kong lawmakers will debate a motion on “Embracing the spirit of the 20th National Congress to further develop Hong Kong”.

The motion, proposed by legislator Dennis Lam Shun-chiu, urges the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government to proactively motivate Hong Kong communities to understand and grasp the essence of the Party Congress and to make best use of the unique positioning of Hong Kong.

Recently, district offices in North district, Sham Shui Po, Wong Tai Sin, Kwai Tsing, Sha Tin, and Central and Western district separately held such sessions. They invited different keynote speakers, such as officials from the central government’s Liaison Office in the city, as well as lawmakers and social group leaders, to illustrate the key takeaways of the Congress’ report.

Li Gongxun, deputy director of the New Territories Sub-office of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and lawmakers Starry Lee Wai-king and Ben Chan Han-pan participated in the study session held by Kwai Tsing District Office on Friday and shared their understanding of the Congress.

They said that the Party Congress fully reflects that the CPC is willing to shoulder responsibilities, work for the people, and promote Chinese-style modernization in full force, and Hong Kong should better integrate into national development.

Also on Friday, the Central and Western District Office had Yang Chengwei, deputy director of the Hong Kong Island Sub-office of the Liaison Office, and Tommy Li Ying-sang, Hong Kong deputy to the NPC, as the keynote speakers for a local study session. They introduced the key points of the Party Congress’ report in an easy-to-understand manner and elaborated on the central government’s continuous, full and faithful implementation of the principles of “one country, two systems” and “Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong with a high degree of autonomy”.
