A fight for the future
By Li Bingcun in Hong Kong

Amid the worldwide medical crisis caused by COVID-19, Hong Kong has withstood the pandemic with the continuous backing from the nation.

With the nation’s support, including the steady supply of anti-pandemic materials and daily necessities, and the dispatching of medical workers, the virus seems to be not so invincible after all, and the huge pressure of the battle seems to be eased.

At the beginning of the year, when the mainland itself was still short of anti-pandemic necessities such as protective gear, it still maintained a steady flow of supplies to Hong Kong.

Nearly 2,000 stranded Hong Kong residents have been brought back home from the mainland and overseas since February with the central government’s assistance.

The nation also channeled all-around support — in manpower, funding, and equipment — to the city’s universal testing program in September. Experienced mainland experts have also assisted with the building of community treatment facilities and a temporary hospital.

Hong Kong’s third wave of the COVID-19 infections has been gradually eased with the nation’s help and firm support.

Given the possibility of a winter outbreak, the city is also requesting the nation’s assistance in securing vaccines.

The crisis has been a living embodiment of strong support from the nation and a good example of close collaboration in terms of healthcare. It serves as a good indicator as to how the valuable experience could be extended to many other areas in the future, especially in the 11-city Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
