Hong Kong residents’ income up 7.9% in Q2

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s gross national income increased by 7.9 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026 to HK$966.1 billion ($123.17 billion), preliminary data showed on Monday.

The territory’s GNI, which denotes the total income earned by the city’s residents from various economic activities, outpaced GDP growth of 6.9 percent during the second quarter and exceeded GDP by HK$123.7 billion, mainly due to a net inflow of investment income, according to the Census and Statistics Department.

After netting out the effect of price changes over the same period, Hong Kong's GNI increased by 5.3 percent in real terms in the second quarter over a year earlier. The corresponding GDP in the same period increased by 4.3 percent in real terms.

The region's total inflow of primary income, which mainly comprises investment income, estimated at HK$664.6 billion in the second quarter of 2026 and equivalent to 78.9 percent of GDP in that quarter, recorded an increase of 6.4 percent over a year earlier.

Meanwhile, total primary income outflow, estimated at HK$540.9 billion in the second quarter and equivalent to 64.2 percent of GDP in that quarter, also rose by 4.5 percent over a year earlier.

The Chinese mainland continued to be the largest source of the SAR's total primary income inflow in the second quarter, accounting for 40.6 percent, and was followed by the Cayman Islands, with a share of 11.3 percent.

Regarding total primary income outflow, the mainland and the British Virgin Islands remained the most important destinations in the second quarter, accounting for 30.3 percent and 20.5 percent, respectively.
