SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir - Militants attacked Indian security forces with a grenade and gunfire in Kashmir on Wednesday, defying a strict security lockdown on the first anniversary of the government’s revocation of the Himalayan region's special status.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, police said.

Thousands of police and paramilitary personnel were deployed on roads in the region including Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, to enforce the restrictions.

The government forces laid barricades and coils of concertina wires on the roads to impede the movement of people and vehicles.

Mushtaq Ahmad, a resident in the old part of Srinagar city, said police vans with loudspeakers came to his locality in the morning.

On Aug 5 last year, India's federal government unilaterally abrogated the region's special status by scrapping Article 370 of Indian constitution. The move stripped the region of its separate flag and constitution.

A separatist movement and guerrilla war challenging New Delhi's rule is going on in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989.

The abrogation of special status to Indian-controlled Kashmir has heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad.
