2 militants killed in fierce gunfight in Indian-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR - Two militants were killed Wednesday in a fierce gunfight with government forces, while as a top militant commander was trapped in another gunfight that raged at a separate area in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, Indian police said.

"One more militant was killed in Sharshali gunfight and the toll rose to two," a police official posted in Pulwama said.

Meanwhile, a top militant commander was trapped in Beighpora village near Awantipora in the same district.

"The gunfight is going on at Beighpora Awantipur. Any speculative reporting unconfirmed stuff having law and order bearings is highly irresponsible on the part of some channels. They are advised to hold their guns please," a police spokesman said.

Soon after the gunfight started, the limited mobile internet service in the region was suspended.   So far, government forces have not suffered any casualties in these gunfights.

There has been a sudden spike in gunfights and attacks on government forces amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the region.

A guerilla war has been going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the area since 1989. Gunfights between the two sides take place intermittently across the region.
