Hong Kong universities suspend on-campus classes

HONG KONG - Several universities in Hong Kong announced on Friday that they would further postpone the start of the spring semester to early March due to the heightened threat of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The Hong Kong University and Hong Kong Baptist University both said online classes would be conducted instead

The Hong Kong University announced on its official website that on-campus classes would be suspended until March 2. The institution will offer online classes from Feb 3 and will begin a two-week recess from Feb 17, during which no teaching and learning activities will be scheduled.

Hong Kong Baptist University has said it would suspend in-class teaching and online classes would be conducted until March 2. All students and university faculties are required to hand in their health declaration forms before returning to classes.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is also delaying the start of the new semester to March 1.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and some other universities had earlier suspended on-campus classes until Feb 17.

The Department of Health said that two more people had tested positive for the virus, bringing the confirmed cases in the city to 12.

Macao has seven confirmed cases. To contain the epidemic, the Macao government on Thursday announced the indefinite suspension of classes at all schools.
