KANSAS CITY – An impressive display by goalkeeper Eloy Room helped Curacao earn its first World Cup point, holding Ecuador to a 0-0 draw in the 999th match in World Cup history on Saturday.

After losing 1-0 to Cote d'Ivoire in its opening Group E match, Ecuador needed at least a draw to keep its progression hopes alive. The South Americans started brightly as Enner Valencia dribbled through and saw an effort denied by Room just three minutes into the match.

World Cup debutant Curacao responded five minutes later when Sherel Floranus tested the Ecuador defense with a shot. Ecuador dominated possession and fashioned more clear chances, but the finishing touches were consistently just off.

Curacao's best chance came in the 33rd minute when Juninho Bacuna's shot deflected off Willian Pacho and fell to Hernan Galindez, who managed to keep it out.

Room denied six shots on target in the first half and added further saves after the break, standing firm to secure a vital point for Curacao.

With two wins from two matches, Germany has already advanced into the knockout stage. Cote d'Ivoire sits second with three points, followed by Ecuador and Curacao both on one point, as all three teams still have a chance to advance.
