The Hong Kong Observatory on Thursday issued the black rainstorm warning signal as intense thundery showers lashed the city.

The observatory issued the signal at 12:55 pm, warning of serious road flooding with heavy rain exceeding 70 millimeters in an hour expected to fall over the territory. It added that the black rainstorm warning was expected to remain in force at least until 3 pm.

“Intense gusts may continue to affect Hong Kong. Seek safe shelter as soon as possible if you are outdoors,” the HKO said, adding that gusts of around 80 kilometers per hour were recorded at Tap Mun at around 1:45 pm.

Due to the threat of serious flooding and inclement weather, the HKO advised members of the public to take shelter in a safe place and avoid attempting to travel until the black rainstorm warning signal is lifted and traffic conditions have improved.

As a protective measure, the MTR said it was closing several exits of some stations, including exit A2 of Sham Shui Po Station, exit A1 of Choi Hung Station and exit B3 of Wong Tai Sin Station.

The observatory said heavy rain was affecting the northern part of the New Territories, especially Yuen Long, Sheung Shui, and Ta Kwu Ling.

Residents in the northern New Territories, who are likely to be affected, are advised to take necessary precautions as the heavy downpour may bring about flash floods, the HKO said.

Those living near rivers should stay alert to weather conditions and consider evacuation if their homes become flooded, it added.

The observatory also urged parents, students, school authorities and school-bus drivers to listen to radio or television announcements on schools.

It said the weather on Thursday afternoon and evening is expected to be cloudy with showers and a few squally thunderstorms, before improving on Friday, when the city marks the Tuen Ng Festival, popularly known as the Dragon Boat Festival.
