KATHMANDU – Police on Saturday morning arrested former Nepalese prime minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli and former home minister Ramesh Lekhak for their alleged involvement in suppressing the Gen Z protest in September last year, which left dozens of people dead.

Oli, who is also the chairman of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) and Lekhak were arrested a day after the Rastriya Swatantra Party formed the government.

"We have arrested former Prime Minister Oli and the former home minister Lekhak. Nobody is above the law," Sudan Gurung, minister for Home Affairs, posted on his Facebook.

The first cabinet meeting of the Balendra Shah government, held on Friday evening, decided to implement the recommendations of an inquiry commission formed to investigate atrocities on Sept 8, 2025, of the Gen Z protest and arson and destruction of properties on Sept 9.
