TEHERAN - The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Friday condemned a "meddlesome and irresponsible" anti-Teheran resolution adopted by the European Parliament.

On Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution, accusing the Iranian government of violating human rights during the recent unrest in the country, expressing "full solidarity" with Iranians and calling for the designation of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps as a terrorist organization.

In a statement, the ministry said the resolution contained "false and incorrect" claims about the recent events in Iran as well as "meddlesome and irresponsible" statements against the country.

"Through supporting the imposition of cruel sanctions and obeying the US illegal embargoes on Iran and complicity with Israel in the June military aggression against the country," the European Parliament failed to have any moral eligibility to preach about human rights, it said.

Iran is obligated to protect its citizens' security, public order, and national sovereignty against any terrorist act or foreign threat and intervention, and will take reciprocal actions in response to any "illegal and interventionist" decision or stance regarding its armed and security forces, it added.

Protests erupted since late December in several Iranian cities over the sharp depreciation of the rial. The Iranian government has expressed its willingness to address economic grievances but has also warned against violence, vandalism and unrest.

Initially peaceful, the protests gradually escalated into violence, leading to casualties and damage to public property, mosques, government buildings and banks, especially on Jan 8-9, for which Teheran has blamed the United States and Israel.
