Observatory: HK to see cooler weather during Christmas holidays

Revelers in Hong Kong can enjoy cooler weather with sunny intervals during the holidays as temperatures in the city are expected to drop to a minimum of 15 degrees Celsius during Christmas Day and to 14°C on Boxing Day.

The Hong Kong Observatory said a replenishment of the northeast monsoon will reach the coast of southern China on Wednesday night and Christmas morning.   

“The weather will be cloudier over the region with temperatures falling progressively during the Christmas holidays,” the observatory said.

It said temperatures in the city could drop to 17°C on Christmas morning and fall further to 15°C in the evening.

“The minimum temperature in the urban areas will be about 14 degrees on Boxing Day, and cold over parts of the New Territories. Fine over the weekend, but still cool in the morning,” the observatory added.

The mercury could drop to as low as 11°C on Christmas Day in Ta Kwu Ling in the New Territories and fall further to 9°C on Boxing Day and on Saturday.

Tseung Kwan O could log a minimum of 13°C on Thursday and 12°C on Friday while Wong Chuk Hang in Hong Kong Island could see a low of 14°C on Christmas Day and 13°C on Boxing Day.

The HKO said the temperature difference between day and night will be relatively large over inland areas.

The maximum temperature in the city could reach 21°C on Christmas Day, 17°C on Boxing Day, and 21°C on Saturday.
