HONG KONG - The boccia competition of the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games on Wednesday entered its second day at Kai Tak Arena in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Hong Kong will stage all boccia events, including men's and women's individual, double, and team events, and 14 gold medals will be awarded.
The boccia competition comprises nearly 100 athletes from 13 teams from the mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao, competing for honors. Hong Kong will field 11 men and eight women athletes.
Boccia players are categorized into four classes, from BC1 to BC4, according to the HKSAR's website for the games.
BC1 players propel the ball with their hands or feet and are allowed to have an assistant. The assistant usually sits in a designated area behind the court, ready to stabilize or adjust the player’s wheelchair and pass the ball to the player. BC2 players propel the ball with their hands and are not allowed to have an assistant. BC3 players roll the ball down a ramp with the help of an assistant. The assistant adjusts the ramp’s inclination and direction according to the player’s instructions. During the match, the assistant must face away from the court and refrain from speaking to the player. The assistant will also be awarded a medal if the player wins. BC4 players propel the ball with their hands or feet. Only players using their feet are allowed to have an assistant.
The competition began on Tuesday and will run until this Sunday.
