Hong Kong residents woke up to a chilly morning on Wednesday as temperatures in the city dropped to around 13 degrees Celsius, the lowest so far this autumn, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.

The HKO said the minimum temperature at the observatory in Tsim Sha Tsui dipped to 13.2°C due to the intense northeast monsoon as the weather over the city remained mainly cloudy.

“Under the influence of an intense northeast monsoon, the weather was appreciably cooler over Hong Kong this morning,” the HKO said.

“A minimum temperature of 13.2 degrees was recorded at the observatory, the lowest so far this autumn and temperatures in the New Territories were generally one to two degrees lower.”

The mercury dropped to as low as 9.3°C at The Peak in Hong Kong Island, 11.7°C in Kowloon City, 11.9°C in Kwun Tong, and 11.8°C in Ta Kwu Ling in the New Territories.

The observatory also issued the Strong Monsoon Signal at 7:45 am, which meant that strong winds with mean speed exceeding 40 kph were expected from the north.

Due to the windy weather, the HKO reminded the public that the wind chill effect will be rather significant, which would make people feel colder than the actual air temperature due to the wind and cold.

“Members of the public are advised to be aware of the change in weather, keep warm and take care of the elderly and persons with chronic medical conditions,” the observatory said.

It added that Hong Kong could see a maximum temperature of about 17°C on Wednesday and it will be very dry.
