Lee to cheer on HK’s record 600-strong team to National Games

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu will give a morale boost to the Hong Kong, China contingent with a record 600 athletes set to compete in the upcoming 15th National Games, during a flag presentation ceremony to be held on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media ahead of a weekly Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, he said the special administrative region is well prepared to co-host the nation’s premier sporting event with Guangdong province and the Macao SAR for the first time.

The 15th National Games will open in the Guangdong provincial capital, Guangzhou, on Nov 9 and close in Shenzhen on Nov 21. It will be followed by the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games from Dec 8 to 15.

After attending the flame-lighting ceremony in Guangzhou on Thursday, Lee said Hong Kong is finalizing its own leg of the torch relay route that will take in the city’s unique cultural and sporting characteristics.

The torchbearers will include prominent figures from the sports world and other sectors of the community.

More than 100,000 spectators are expected to visit Hong Kong for the Games. The scale of the events will be massive, with a total of 4,000 athletes, media personnel and delegation members expected to participate before an audience of hundreds of thousands. More than 16,000 volunteers will offer support in various roles.

Lee said details have been formulated for every segment of the Games, covering security, crowd management and transport.

“I hope all sectors of Hong Kong society and residents will extend their support and hospitality, showcasing the city’s status as a premier international mega events hub, with a simple, safe and spectacular national celebration,” he said.
