The strength of SHE: Why gender equality is key to a better future
By Liu Chen

As the world continues its journey toward modernization, we face a paradox. On the one hand, the global gross domestic product has grown nearly fourfold since the 1980s, reflecting tremendous economic progress. On the other hand, gender equality -- a goal fundamental to a just and sustainable future -- remains elusive.

According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report, no country has yet achieved full gender parity and, at the current pace, closing the global gender gap will take decades.

Yet, progress is possible. Across the world and, notably in China, women are stepping into roles as leaders, innovators and change makers. They’re not only benefiting from modernization, they’re driving it. And, as the world grapples with uncertainty, their empowerment is more important than ever.

A remarkable transformation in China

In 1952, China’s GDP stood at just 67.9 billion yuan ($9.51 billion), with a per capita income of 119 yuan -- a level so low it hardly covered basic necessities. Over the past 70 years, through reform and development, China has achieved remarkable economic and social progress. Women have been at the center of that transformation.

A 2025 government report, titled “China’s Achievements in Women’s Well-Rounded Development in the New Era”, highlights how Chinese women today are contributing across all sectors -- from science and technology to education, business and public service. Far from being passive beneficiaries, they are active architects of the country’s progress.

China is also ensuring that women are not left behind in the age of artificial intelligence and digital innovation. Aligned with the Global AI Governance Initiative put forward by President Xi Jinping in 2023, China has launched an AI Capacity-Building Action Plan for Good and for All, promoting inclusive technology development that empowers women and advances shared prosperity.

A global commitment rooted in cooperation

China’s approach to development is guided by the principle of “Tianxia Weigong”-- a vision of the world for the common good. This philosophy emphasizes mutual respect, win-win cooperation and people-centered development. In practice, it means prioritizing partnerships with other developing countries to explore modernization paths that are inclusive and equitable. These efforts are widely recognized.

According to the report, titled The Chinese Story in Global Order, a majority of people in the Global South view China’s development as a positive influence, and express interest in learning from its experience. Gender equality is a key part of that story. As economic cooperation expands, it brings jobs, education, healthcare, and poverty reduction all of which, disproportionately, benefit women and girls.

Legacy of Beijing Declaration

The global community’s commitment to gender equality was powerfully affirmed at the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing where the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action were adopted. These documents remain a landmark blueprint for advancing women’s rights worldwide.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of that milestone. In recognition, China will host a global women’s summit in Beijing on Sept 13 and 14, bringing together leaders, activists and advocates to reaffirm global commitments and chart a path forward. The message is clear: gender equality is not just a women’s issue, it’s a societal imperative.

Symbol of SHE

Let us pause on that word: SHE. It is more than a pronoun. It is a symbol of strength, resilience and potential. SHE is the student dreaming of a brighter future. SHE is the scientist solving the world’s challenges. SHE is the farmer, the teacher, the entrepreneur, the leader. SHE is every woman whose voice drives progress and whose empowerment strengthens communities.

Today, as the world faces unprecedented disruptions -- from climate change to geopolitical conflict to technological upheaval -- the need for inclusive, cooperative solutions has never been greater. Gender equality is not a sidebar to these challenges – it is central to overcoming them.

Research shows that greater gender equality leads to stronger economies, more stable societies and better outcomes for all. When women lead, innovate, and participate fully, everyone benefits.

Looking ahead with hope and resolve

As the ancient Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi observed: “The Way of Heaven moves ceaselessly; thus all things are born. It has always been so, and always will be.” Progress may be uneven, and the road ahead uncertain, but the march toward a more equal and inclusive world continues.

To all the SHEs around the world: know that your strength is needed. Your voice matters. And your future is worth fighting for. SHE is not just part of the future. SHE is its very foundation.
