PYONGYANG - The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Thursday held a grand commemorative meeting at the May Day Stadium to celebrate the 80th founding anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Friday.
Kim Jong-un, general secretary of the WPK and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK, delivered a speech at the event, which was attended by delegations from foreign parties and governments.
In his speech, Kim reviewed the history of the party's formation and its leading role in the country's revolution.
He said that by successfully leading social transformation of different stages under the banner of the Juche idea, the WPK has built a genuine people's country, a powerful country that comprehensively embodies socialist ideas and ideals, while also making a significant contribution to advancing the international cause of independence and justice, Kim was quoted by the KCNA as saying.

He noted that the WPK has persevered under the banner of independence and socialism despite adversities and that the DPRK's international prestige as a faithful member of the socialist forces and a bulwark for independence and justice continues to grow.
Kim added that he will work with the DPRK people to transform the country into a more affluent and beautiful socialist nation.
The speech was followed by a grand mass gymnastics and artistic performance on Thursday evening, said the report.
