DPRK convenes key meeting to address economy, defense

PYONGYANG - The Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) convened an enlarged meeting of the 13th plenary meeting of its Eighth Central Committee from Tuesday to Thursday, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Friday.

Kim Jong-un, general secretary of the WPK, presided over the key year-end meeting to sum up the major party and state affairs in 2025.

On the economic front, Kim stressed that the major industrial sectors of the national economy carried out their highly-set production plans, the agricultural sector recorded higher grain yields over last year and a lot of major construction projects were successfully completed, and that the five-year plan was carried out along with the achievement of the objectives of this year's economic development.

On national defense, significant achievements were made in accordance with the party's policy on modernizing the national defense capabilities, and the signal military gains were made by units of different arms of the Korean People's Army in the overseas military operations over the past nearly one year, Kim was quoted by the report as saying.

The celebrations of the 80th founding anniversary of the WPK held this year redoubled the strong will of the DPRK people to build a socialist society, he added.

The top DPRK leader also laid out some major tasks facing the party, government and state organizations at present, said the report.

The plenary meeting discussed and unanimously approved several agenda items, including "on the review of the implementation of the policies of the party and the state in 2025", "on the work of the Central Inspection Commission of the party in 2025" and "on the important issues related to the preparations for the Ninth Congress of the party", it said.
