Hong Kong can expect improved weather conditions during the Mid-Autumn Festival as Tropical Cyclone Matmo continued to move away from the city, the Hong Kong Observatory said Sunday.
The HKO replaced the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 with the Standby Signal, No. 1 at 3:40 pm as the typhoon made landfall in Guangdong.
“Matmo has made landfall over Zhanjiang, Guangdong and will move further away from Hong Kong. Local winds are gradually weakening,” the observatory said.

It added that when Matmo no longer poses a threat to Hong Kong, all tropical cyclone warning signals will be canceled.
"The weather will improve at the Mid-Autumn Festival, apart from one or two showers. There will be cloudy periods in the morning and at night," the observatory said.

At 4 pm Sunday, the typhoon was estimated to be about 430 kilometers west-southwest of Hong Kong and was forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometers per hour across the vicinity of Leizhou Peninsula to the coast of Guangxi.
The observatory reminded the public that Hong Kong will still be a few squally showers and thunderstorms on Sunday.

“Winds will be occasionally strong offshore and on high ground at first, gusty at times. Seas will be rough with swells,” the HKO said, adding that members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and avoid water sports.

In Macao, the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau raised the typhoon signal No 8 at 2 am on Sunday as Matmo moved closer to the city. The bureau later lowered it to T3 at 1 pm Sunday as the typhoon departed.
