Chinese shares close higher Monday

BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed higher on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.34 percent to 3,647.55 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.46 percent higher at 11,291.43 points.

The combined turnover of these two indices stood at 1.83 trillion yuan ($256.28 billion) - up from 1.71 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares related to PEEK plastics, energy and metal, and batteries led the gains, while stocks related to precious metals and banking suffered major losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.96 percent to close at 2,379.82 points.
