
The Shunde Overseas Chinese Museum in Foshan, Guangdong province, has recently received a significant cultural donation from renowned Hong Kong-born conductor and composer Maestro Gustav Mak Ka-lok.
His contribution of 21 personal recordings, along with awards, certificates, and photographs, enhances the museum's collection dedicated to the history and culture of Shunde's overseas Chinese community.

The donation ceremony on Nov 9, attended by a host of dignitaries and international supporters, was a testament to Mak's enduring connection to his roots.

In his speech, Leung Wai-pui, a key figure in Shunde's cultural affairs, praised Mak's donation as a reflection of his deep love for his hometown and a significant enrichment of the museum's treasures.
Among the donated items are 19 compact discs from 1993, featuring Mak's performances with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, produced by Hugo Production Company.

The recordings span a diverse range of music, from Chinese classics like the "Long March Symphony" to Western masterpieces such as Mahler's and Tchaikovsky's symphonies.

Additional highlights include the renowned LaserDisc “Yellow River and Butterfly Lovers Concerto,” which received a platinum award and showcases Mak's commitment to promoting Chinese culture globally.
After the ceremony, Mak led a concert at the Shunde Museum, blending Eastern and Western musical influences.

The performance included compositions by Mozart, Bach, and Tchaikovsky, alongside pop songs and traditional Shunde folk music, featuring acclaimed soloists like Xu Li and Huang Hong Ying.

Open for a month, the exhibition also includes a narrative of Mak's musical journey, rare photographs, and prestigious awards, such as the "Decoration of Honor in Gold" from Austria and the "Outstanding Theatre Piece" award for his opera "The Legend of Confucius".
Organized by the United Front Work Department and hosted by the Shunde Museum, the event marks a significant cultural milestone celebrating Mak's artistic achievements and his efforts to share China's musical heritage with the world.
