Shenzhen plans to build two new checkpoints for Hetao and Qianhai, rebuild Huanggang and Shatoujiao border checkpoints and upgrade Luohu checkpoint, according to the director of Shenzhen’s Office of Port of Entry and Exit.

The Hetao checkpoint will support the development of Shenzhen Park of Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone while Qianhai will serve the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone, said Liu Weixiang.

Speaking on a radio show on Tuesday, he said Shenzhen will also adjust the roles of various checkpoints to enhance the smooth flow of cargo.

“Cargo inspection function at the Shenzhen Bay checkpoint and the Huanggang checkpoint will be discontinue. And Liantang checkpoint will take over the handling of fresh goods from the Wenjindu checkpoint.”

The entry and exit services for cross-border helicopters will be added at Shekou checkpoint, making it China’s first port to serve both water and air transportation.

Shenzhen's border checkpoints processed 134 million passenger trips from Jan 1 to Aug 4 this year. The demand for late-night entry and exit has surged, especially during festivals or mega-events in Hong Kong.

Liu encouraged cross-border passengers to use the “i口岸” (iPort) WeChat mini-program. The mini-program shows real-time traffic flows at various checkpoints and provides some 70 services such as booking parking space or currency exchange.
