Hong Kong will usher in Chinese New Year with a mammoth 23-minute fireworks display featuring 31,888 pyrotechnic shells, which will illuminate Victoria Harbour on Feb 18, the second day of the new year.

Coordinated by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and sponsored exclusively by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), the - HK$19 million ($2.43 million) spectacle will be part of the club’s celebrations for the Year of the Horse.

Themed “Prosperity Gallops Across Hong Kong”, the pyrotechnics will incorporate dynamic equine motifs and traditional auspicious symbols such as horseshoes and Chinese gold ingots, symbolizing prosperity and success in the coming year.

The Chinese New Year festivities will also feature the International Chinese New Year Night Parade on Feb 17, starring equestrian athlete Patrick Lam and jockey Britney Wong Po-ni who will ride on the club’s float to extend New Year greetings to the public. The Year of the Horse Raceday will be held on Feb 19 at Sha Tin, offering a full program of festive activities.

Another Year of the Horse celebratory highlight will be the three-day Hong Kong International Horse Show at AsiaWorld-Expo from Jan 30 to Feb 1. The festival will feature world-class show jumping and equestrian demonstrations, alongside displays by retired racehorses retrained for equine musical performances.

Looking further ahead, the HKJC will bring the acclaimed European equestrian spectacular Cavalluna to Hong Kong for its Asian premiere at Kai Tak Arena in September. The extravaganza will combine music, dance, and drama with 50 horses and top riders.

Adding star power to the campaign, the club has appointed iconic singer and performer Aaron Kwok Fu-shing — one of Hong Kong’s “Four Heavenly Kings” — as its Year of the Horse Ambassador. Kwok will participate in promotional activities and record a special Year of the Horse theme song.
