BANGUI — A soldier from the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) was killed and five others wounded on Monday following the detonation of an explosive device in the northwest of the Central African Republic, according to local sources.

The peacekeeper died during a patrol by the UN force in the village of Mbindale between Kowone and Pougol, 45 km northwest of Paoua, in the Lim Pende prefecture, the UN mission in the Central African Republic announced in an information note on Monday night.

According to the MINUSCA, a Cameroonian contingent escorting a team from the International Organization for Migration ran over an explosive device.

Five other peacekeepers were injured, two of them seriously, as a result of the explosion. The wounded were medically evacuated from Pougol to Bouar, the capital of the Nana-Mambere prefecture, where they are receiving first aid, said Joel Ndoli Pierre, acting spokesman for MINUSCA.

MINUSCA called on the Central African Republic authorities to spare no effort in identifying those responsible for this attack on peacekeepers and bringing them to justice.
