Newspaper Society elects new executive committee

The city’s oldest newspaper association – the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong – on Wednesday elected a new executive committee, with veteran publisher Lee Cho-jat staying on as president.

A total of 16 council members were elected, drawn from its member newspapers, including George Ng from China Daily Hong Kong edition, Luo Zheng from local Chinese language newspaper Wen Wei Po, and Cai Jin from Sing Tao Daily

The council elected Alice Kwok as chairperson and Tammy Tam and Betty Kwok as vice-chairpersons. Alan Lo was elected as executive director and Lo Wing-hung as the spokesperson.

The Society said in a statement that it will continue to work to raise the professional standard of journalism, safeguard the interests of the industry, and maintain close communication with the government

“Regardless of the changing ecology of the media, newspapers as major news providers must abide by the principle of seeking truth, and be socially responsible in fostering social progress,” the statement read.

The society was established in 1954 by four newspapers and its membership now numbers 14, covering almost all the major newspapers in the city.

The society has long organized the annual Hong Kong News Awards – a prestigious event in the city for both Chinese and English newspapers. The awards are aimed at recognizing the outstanding achievements of journalists and raising professional standards and are widely recognized as the most authoritative in Hong Kong.

China Daily Hong Kong edition has been a regular participant and prize winner of the news awards. Over the past 13 years, China Daily Hong Kong has nabbed a total of 113 awards at the news awards. In 2022, it took home eight prizes spanning five categories such as Best Arts and Culture News Reporting and Best Science News Reporting.
