HONG KONG - CLP Power Hong Kong Limited said on Monday that a cable bridge fire in Yuen Long that caused a major blackout in June was related to a low-voltage electrical installation near the bridge.
According to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, CLP Power submitted on Monday its final report on the incident, adding that it is reviewing the content.

The EMSD and independent third-party experts are reviewing the report in detail, evaluating whether the identified cause is well founded and remedial measures are appropriate.

According to the report, CLP Power believes the fire started near the entrance of Kwong Yip Street. It sets out in the report the remedial measures that have been made at all its cable bridges, including installation of additional fire-protection and fire-fighting devices, as well as replacement of all low-voltage electrical installations that may cause a fire.
“The EMSD and independent third-party experts are reviewing the report in detail, evaluating whether the identified cause is well founded and remedial measures are appropriate,” the department said.
The EMSD said it will ask CLP Power for more information if needed, adding that it has also requested CLP Power to make known to the public details of the report at an opportune time.

The incident affected the power supply of around 160,000 customers in Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai and Tuen Mun districts on June 21 and forced 14 schools in Tin Shui Wai to suspend classes the following day.
