Chinese team captain to miss East Asian Cup due to injury

BEIJING - Chinese men's team captain Wu Xi is set to miss the East Asian Cup tournament after he suffered a rib fracture in a Chinese Super League match.

The midfielder picked up the injury when he collided with an opposition player in Shanghai Shenhua's 4-2 loss to Wuhan Three Towns on Sunday.

On Tuesday Wu was confirmed to have sustained a rib fracture in a medical check, Shanghai Shenhua said on social media on Friday.

The Shanghai club said they have briefed the Chinese national team on Wu's injury with relevant medical documents.

Wu has been called up by the Chinese national side for the East Asian Cup tournament, which is scheduled to take place from July 19 to 29.
