Macao ramping up efforts in technology sector

Macao is speeding up efforts to promote the development of new technologies, including smart cities and the technology service industry.

These updates are not limited to electronic payments and online shopping but have also penetrated more aspects of life.

Water supply, often regarded as a traditional industry, is undergoing a digital transformation in the special administrative region. The Macao Water Supply Co Ltd teamed up with Tencent to deploy WeCom as its internal mobile office app and build an Enterprise Application Platform over the platform.

Zhao Yu, manager of the innovation office at Macao Water, said the online smart water system helps manage the daily operation and data sharing of the company’s 270 employees, four water treatment plants and a local pipeline network more than 630 km long across Macao.

In the communications sector, the Macao Telecommunication Company unveiled the Cloud Network Convergence development blueprint of “Digital Macao” on Thursday to inject new impetus into the development of smart transportation in the city.

Meanwhile, CTM and Huawei also signed a cloud strategic collaboration agreement to support and participate in the development of the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Zhuhai.

The agreement was signed at BEYOND Expo 2021, a four-day international technology innovation exhibition which started on Thursday in Macao. Representatives from above 300 multinational corporations such as Alibaba Group, Huawei, SenseTime and Tencent, are displaying their latest products and applications at the exposition.

Zhang Yuzhuo, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and vice-president of the China Association for Science and Technology, said the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Zhuhai provides new opportunities for Macao’s technological innovation and industrial transformation.

He also pointed out that talent is the paramount strategic resource and a key factor for the sustainable development of Macao.

He said at the opening ceremony of the BEYOND Expo 2021 that CAST will further implement the framework agreement on cooperation with Macao, support the in-depth cooperation of technological innovation and facilitate talent exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Macao.
