LONDON – The Chinese Embassy in Britain on Friday strongly condemned a joint statement issued by Britain and several other countries concerning the sentencing of Joshua Wong Chi-fung, saying it interfered in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs.

An embassy spokesperson said China firmly opposes and strongly condemns the statement issued by Britain and other countries, including the United States, Canada and Australia, and has lodged solemn representations with the British side.

The spokesperson stressed that the facts of Wong's crime of conspiracy to collude with a foreign country or external elements to endanger national security are clear and the evidence is conclusive.

The judicial authorities handled the case and handed down a sentence in accordance with the law, acting in a manner that was "lawful, proper and beyond reproach," the spokesperson said.

Stressing that Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs, the spokesperson said no foreign country has the right to make irresponsible remarks on the matter or undermine the rule of law in Hong Kong.
