CARACAS — Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, announced on Thursday that a "revamped" electoral authority will oversee new elections "with the world as a witness."

In a nationwide address, she said that all elections required by the Constitution will be held, with safeguards to prevent the electoral process from becoming a source of trouble or reviving "times of confrontation that no one wants anymore."

Rodriguez added that her government seeks to secure "genuine conditions for fair participation for all political forces," so elections can serve as a way to resolve differences rather than deepen divisions.

She also ordered a review of state-owned "non-essential assets" that could be privatized or returned to their former owners.

The United States brought narco-terrorism charges against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro before launching a military operation in Venezuela and capturing him in the name of law enforcement in January.

Maduro, who was forcibly seized and transported to New York together with his wife Cilia Flores, has urged a US judge to dismiss criminal charges against him, arguing that he is protected by immunity as the head of a sovereign state.
