The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is actively enhancing its role in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s green value chain to drive regional sustainable development, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said on Monday.

Lee made the remarks during a meeting at Government House with Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu to discuss deepening environmental cooperation. Huang led a delegation to Hong Kong to officiate at the Belt and Road Green Innovation Conference 2026.

Describing the Greater Bay Area as a key engine for the nation’s high-quality development, Lee highlighted that Hong Kong has facilitated the establishment of a world-leading sustainable aviation fuel production base in Dongguan.

The HKSAR will strengthen collaboration in resources circulation to jointly build a "Zero Waste Bay Area", leveraging complementary advantages to achieve mutual benefits between the Chinese mainland and the HKSAR, he said.

Under the "one country, two systems" principle, Hong Kong is proactively building itself into an international hub for green cooperation, said Lee, adding that the city will continue to leverage its status as a center for green and sustainable finance while actively exploring cross-boundary carbon trading to support the country in building a carbon market of greater international influence.

Through the Belt and Road Green Development Cooperation Platform established with the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and the Belt and Road Sustainable Green Development Training Centre established by the SAR government’s Environmental Protection Department, Hong Kong will nurture a pool of talent in international environmental protection and foster technology exchanges, Lee said.
