China's nomination of Dr Song Li for director-general of the World Health Organization underscores "China's firm support for multilateralism and the WHO," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Thursday.

This nomination reflects China's willingness to work hand in hand with various parties to jointly advance the building of a global health community for all, Mao said at a daily news conference in Beijing.

Song has long been engaged in maternal and child health work and has over 20 years of experience in maternal and child health policy and international cooperation. She currently serves as a member of the secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation.

Responding to a question about the election, Mao noted that multilateralism is currently under pressure and that the development of global health still faces a long and arduous journey. She emphasized that the role of the director-general is particularly important in ensuring that WHO can navigate new changes and circumstances and move forward steadily.

"We believe that if Dr Song Li is elected as WHO director-general, that will help the organization play a more positive role in enhancing the health and well-being of the entire humanity," Mao said.
