British snooker legend Jimmy White has acquired Hong Kong residency through the city’s Quality Migrant Admission Scheme (QMAS), joining fellow marquee players Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump and Neil Robertson in making the territory their home.

The Immigration Department announced White’s arrival in a social media video post on Wednesday, showing the 64-year-old completing formal procedures to obtain the application acknowledgement form for his Hong Kong identity card.

In the video, White shared his plan to establish a snooker academy, mentor local talent and promote the sport in Hong Kong. He looked forward to reuniting with his “old friends”, while referring to his cameo role in a Hong Kong action-comedy movie Legend of the Dragon in 1991.

Born on May 2, 1962, White is a six-time World Championship finalist renowned for his swift and fluid playing style, which earned him the nickname “The Whirlwind”.

White reached his first World Championship final in 1984 and captured his maiden ranking title at the Mercantile Classic in 1986 before rising to world No 2 the following year. In 2003, he broke into the last 16 of two ranking tournaments, notably defeating Judd Trump at the WST Classic.

Designed to attract top-tier talent, the QMAS assesses applicants using a scoring system focusing on academic and work experience, or an achievement-based test.

Through the QMAS, White became the latest snooker icon to become a Hong Kong resident after British stars O’Sullivan and Trump secured their residency in late 2024, followed by Australian ace Robertson in June 2025.
