HONG KONG — A surveillance camera captured the moment a thief realized he was being filmed during a burglary in Hong Kong, amusing netizens after the footage was posted online.
The break-in occurred at around 2:38 am on Tuesday at a grocery store in the city’s Tai Po district, according to Wen Wei Po.
Three thieves, all wearing long-sleeved clothing and face masks, entered the premises and began searching the store. During the theft, one of them discovered the recording lens and alerted his accomplices before damaging it.
The burglary was discovered around 8 am when the shop owner returned to open for business.
The shop owner later shared photos of the surveillance camera on Facebook, mocking the thief: “Smile! Wow, there’s a surveillance camera!”
Another post reads: “You guys are pretty bold. Coming to burgle my shop. And you drank my cream soda and ate my banana. Remember, I might find you before the police!”

After the footage circulated online, netizens mocked the thieves with comments. One wrote: “Hey hey, there's a surveillance camera here, okay?”
Another posted: “The first one must have said, ‘Hey, look, is that a CCTV?’ Then the teammate went over to check and said, ‘Yes, it is. Let's finish the cream soda and get out of here.’”
According to Wen Wei Po, the thieves took approximately HK$18,000 in cash, multiple car keys, and several bottles of liquor.
