Over the past 29 years, the People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison has established a cherished tradition of opening its normally restricted barracks to residents — especially the younger generation — fostering strong community ties and national pride. This tradition has become a memorable feature of Hong Kong’s various celebrations, and for many, a hallmark of childhood holidays.

As Wednesday marks the 29th anniversary of both Hong Kong’s return to the motherland and the PLA Garrison’s deployment in the city, San Wai and Shek Kong Barracks opened to the public last weekend. In addition, the Ngong Shuen Chau naval base opened its doors a week earlier. Together, the three sites offered 25,000 free tickets to the public.

The open days offered a vibrant blend of military prowess and community spirit. Visitors participated in flag-raising ceremonies, enjoyed military band and drill performances, toured the exhibition center and displays of state-of-the-art equipment, and engaged in hands-on activities such as handling a laser-simulated rifle.
