Chinese, US officials exchange views on ties
By Zhao Jia and Zhang Chenxu

Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the United States on Thursday to work with China to prepare for key high-level engagement, broaden cooperation and keep differences under control.

He made the remarks in a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Head-of-state diplomacy has always served as the anchor of China-US relations, Wang said, noting that under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, bilateral relations have remained generally stable.

Such stability serves the fundamental interests of both peoples and meets the broad expectations of the international community, Wang added.

He called on the two sides to safeguard the hard-won stability in bilateral ties and explore building a relationship that is strategic, constructive and stable, in order to realize mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.

Regarding the Taiwan question, Wang emphasized that it concerns China's core interests and remains the biggest risk in China-US relations. Washington should honor its commitments, make the right choices, open up new space for China-US cooperation and make due efforts to achieve world peace, he said.

Rubio told Wang that the US-China relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world, and that head-of-state diplomacy lies at the core of this relationship.

Both sides should maintain communication and coordination, respect each other, properly manage differences, build up outcomes for high-level engagement and seek strategic stability in bilateral ties, Rubio added.

Also on Thursday, He Lifeng, China's vice-premier and lead for China-US economic and trade affairs, held a video call with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

The Chinese side expressed serious concerns over the recent US economic and trade restrictive measures against China. Both sides agreed to continue to make good use of the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism, build consensus, manage differences and strengthen cooperation, in order to promote the healthy, stable and sustainable development of China-US ties.
